OUR TRAINING

WHAT TO EXPECT IN LESSONS

Our classes combine training methods to cover both the self-defence and martial art aspects of our Wing Chun system. The lessons are informal and students are encouraged to ask questions and enjoy themselves!

fORMS AND SOLO PATTERNS

Most systems of Wing Chun taught in the West are derivations of the system taught by Grandmaster Yip Man. The various lineages differ in some ways but there are many common factors and one of these is the training of 4 empty-hand Forms and 2 weapons Forms.

The 4 empty-hand Forms are Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, Biu Jee and the Muk Yang Jong (Wooden Dummy).

The 2 weapons Forms are The Long Pole (Luk Dim Boon Kwan) and the Butterfly Knife Form (Baat Cham Do).

We proudly call our Wing Chun a system because, with the correct understanding, the movements from all the Forms work seamlessly together.

PARTNER DRILLS AND PATTERNS

The majority of class time consists of partner training. There are a great many hand drills for muscle memory and coordination. These turn certain flows of defence and attack into reflexes. We also teach longer sequences of movements with a partner which help students to remember how to apply every movement from the Wing Chun Forms.

SELF-DEFENCE APPLICATIONs

At each level of our syllabus we teach how to use the techniques from the Forms and drills in self-defence situations. These we call Applications. Here the aim is to deal with an attack in the fastest way possible. In training Applications we test what we have trained with speed, power and intention. Confidence, control and assertiveness increase as a result.
